Writers Bald and Hairy

Glen Strathy, a Dramatica advocate, notes the possibility of something like this: N relates A's experience of B's story. At least, that's my interpretation of what he's saying, and whether I'm on track with him or not, questions of any kind sometimes lead to jogging loose an answer or two.

There's only one character whose voice calls me to write, but it is not his story. With the wrong voice, my writing is bald. I get hairy only when a voice is fuzzing my ears.

I'd forgotten that James Morrow's The Last Witchfinder is narrated by book, Newton's Principia. What an idea.

You're a writer, and so you must act as if you're doing theater-in-the round. On stage there's you in your chair and your device on a table.

Who are you playing to?

I'm not in the cheap seats, where great flourishes of carriage returns gain applause. Nor am I in the balconey, looking down and measuring your finger work. Rather I've got season tickets. I sit somewhere off to the side, watching you at work, and the applause people at your back, and the down-lookers over our heads.

Swivel your face my way when you've a need to look me in the eye. Or just tilt your chin when you need to know I'm looking into yours.

Not all stories are told. Some stories just happen. You overhear a comment in the grocery store, the light changes just as a certain car goes through the intersection, the headline of a news story misleads its content, you stub your toe — and without really noticing, it all adds up to a series of events that resonate as if they inevitably must just because they fall in a series like dominoes. Whether you want them to or not. It just happens that way. It's just the way we're made.
