before
outgrowing your bare feet

the rain
sluiced dust from rock's sharp crevices
leaving tight seedlings to unfurl

the wind
went out on limbs and willingly
fell into whirlpools, there to rest

the sun
cast shadows a dark moon erased
while coyote dreamed a new day

you walked
slipshod in simple poetry
when it used to matter
