There was a time when she was not aware of eyes everywhere around her. They did not peer out curiously from behind windows she walked past or furtively through smoky exhalations in crowded bars. She looked first through her own eyes, at leaf shapes twisting on stems and flipping like coins. If she thought about it—and she did—what grasshoppers and frogs saw were other worlds alongside her own, with their particular and privileged curvatures. The universe was a multiplicity then, not a singular thing. Nor was she a singular self.
